to the Refuge
The easiest way to get to the refuge is to take I-25 South from Denver
to Walsenburg, CO. Take the first exit for Walsenburg (also the exit
for Highway 69) and turn right at the top of the exit ramp. Turn right
after the first gas station onto Highway 69, headed toward Gardner and
Westcliffe. Follow 69 through Gardner, then turn right onto Gardner
Road (also known as County Road 634) – a dirt road ~ 1 ½
miles north of town, across from the Muddy Creek Ranch. Follow Gardner
Road for 13 ½ miles to Blue Spring. Immediately after the cattle
guard (one of many you will cross on Gardner Road) at Blue Spring, turn
right onto our driveway (there is a broken metal cattle tank on the
left side of the road after you turn). Follow the driveway ~ 1 ½
miles to the top of the hill and Mission:Wolf.
In dry times the Gardner road is fine for 2-wheel-drive vehicles but
in very muddy conditions or when there is snow you must have a 4-wheel-drive
vehicle.
Children under the age of six may not be allowed near wolves on tours
depending on their individual behavior. All dogs must be left in the
vehicle at the bottom of the steep hill on our driveway. If the dog
starts barking, someone must return to the car.
Visiting Hours 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM (or an hour before sunset, whichever
comes first).
